Board and train, Spring Branch

Board and train in Spring Branch: a straight run down the Beltway or 290

Spring Branch puts new townhomes next to big older lots, families near the Memorial-side schools and parents on corporate travel schedules. Its dogs range from a townhome doodle that has never had a yard to a big-lot shepherd that has never seen a sidewalk.

The stay, from Spring Branch

Drop off on the way to the office, or let us collect the dog while you travel.

From Spring Branch you have two easy routes: 290 out to Cypress, or I-10 west and up through the Beltway, either about 25 to 35 minutes outside rush hour. Drop-off fits before a workday, and you bring the food, medications and records and give our trainer the specifics: the door the dog bolts, the walk it ruins, the guest it growls at. Families mid-travel often add the $250 transport instead and we collect the dog at the door.

The first day is quiet by design, and from day two the work is daily in the training home and on the sidewalks, stores and lake around it. Photos and video arrive Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so you can follow along from a hotel as easily as from the kitchen. The stay ends with the go-home session: at the training home if you dropped off, in your house if you added transport or booked VIP, and in either case with you on the leash and our trainer coaching.

What a Spring Branch dog practices

Two kinds of dog: the townhome walker and the big-lot yard dog.

The townhome dog needs a loose leash on a narrow sidewalk, a wait at a front door that opens straight onto the street, and a settle in a house where the living room is the whole downstairs. The big-lot dog needs the opposite work: it has had space and no rules, so it needs a recall, a boundary at the driveway and manners when it finally meets a leash. Both learn place, the structured walk and door boundaries in the training home; the emphasis shifts to fit the house it is going back to.

Neutrality is built on field trips. Terry Hershey Park, a Harris County Precinct 3 park along Buffalo Bayou, and Memorial Park are both a short drive from Spring Branch and give runners, cyclists and other dogs at every distance. The stores along I-10 at Bunker Hill and Memorial City give aisles, carts and automatic doors. Check the park operators' sites for current rules before you practice there.

  • Loose leash on a narrow townhome sidewalk
  • Recall and a driveway boundary for the big-lot dog
  • Neutrality past runners and bikes at Terry Hershey Park
  • Calm in the Memorial City stores

Which program Spring Branch families choose

Platinum, most of the time, because the calendar here is unpredictable.

Gold at $2,500 fits the friendly dog that pulls, jumps and ignores the door: two weeks of sit and stay, place, loose leash, door boundaries, jumping, pulling and impulse control, with the go-home session, one added lesson and lifelong support. Platinum at $3,750 is what most Spring Branch families end up choosing, because it covers reactivity, anxiety and guarding. The unlimited private lessons afterwards can be booked around travel, and the field trips into public places produce a dog that behaves at the school pickup line and the patio.

VIP at $10,000 is six weeks with off-leash reliability, the Mini-Educator included, transport home and an in-home handover with unlimited in-home lessons; the big-lot family with a dog that will hike and travel with them is the usual VIP household here. The one-week Silver, $1,500, is the refresher for a dog that has trained before.

  • Gold for manners in two weeks
  • Platinum for behavior work and lessons that flex around travel
  • VIP for the off-leash, travel-everywhere dog

Prices and the deposit

Published prices, a $250 deposit, and transport that pays for itself on a travel week.

Gold is $2,500, Platinum $3,750 and VIP $10,000, and nothing changes by neighborhood. The $250 reservation deposit books the dates and is credited against the balance. Transport is $250 door to door with the first lesson at your home, included in VIP; from Spring Branch it is a fair trade against a Beltway round trip on a workday, and it puts the go-home session in your house, where the front door, the stairs and the block are the real test.

Follow-up lessons are $160 at the training home or $220 at your home; Platinum and VIP include them without limit. Graduates can book boarding with training refreshers when a trip comes up, which is often the reason a Spring Branch family calls back. The consultation call is free, hours run 6am to 9pm daily, and both are booked with one quick call.

Spring Branch specifics

Beltway commutes, hot sidewalks and a dog that has to behave at school pickup.

A Spring Branch dog gets walked before the commute and after it, which in summer means the pavement test at 6am and again at 8pm, because from May to September the middle of the day is for store aisles and the house. The school pickup line and the sidewalk outside it are a daily neutrality test with strollers, scooters and other dogs, so Platinum field trips are chosen to look like that. Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, is talked through at booking, including who handles the dog if one parent is traveling.

  • Pavement test before the morning and evening walk
  • Neutrality built for the school pickup crowd
  • A settle at home while the family is on the road
  • Storm-season plan agreed at booking

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How long does the drive from Spring Branch take?

About 25 to 35 minutes outside rush hour. 290 from the Beltway is the usual route, and I-10 west is the alternative when 290 is slow. The training home is in Cypress off 290 near Fry Road, and the address comes with your booking.

We travel for work. Can you pick the dog up?

Yes. The $250 transport collects your dog at your door, includes the first lesson in your home and returns the dog for the go-home session there. VIP includes it. Families on a travel week find it easier than the Beltway round trip.

My townhome has no yard. Does that matter?

Not for the training. The dog learns place, the crate and a settle inside the training home and the structured walk on the sidewalks around it, which is what a yard-less dog needs most. The go-home session in your townhome, with transport or VIP, covers the door onto the street and the stairs.

What about our big-lot dog that has never been on a leash?

That dog usually does best in Platinum or VIP. It needs a recall, a boundary at the driveway and leash manners taught from scratch, and the field trips to make them hold around other dogs. VIP takes it to off-leash reliability, which is what a big lot really asks for.

Where will the go-home session be?

At the training home in Cypress if you dropped off, at your Spring Branch home if you added transport or booked VIP. For a townhome the at-home version is worth it: the front door onto the street and the stairs to the living room are where the manners have to work.
