The stay, from Oak Forest

Twenty-five minutes up 290 for drop-off, and the same road back for the handover.

Oak Forest and Garden Oaks are the closest inner-Beltway neighborhoods to the training home: about 25 minutes straight up 290 outside rush hour. Drop-off is a short morning with the food, medications and records and a few minutes with our trainer about the porch, the trail and the coffee shop. Families who want the handover at home add the $250 transport, and our trainer does the first lesson on your porch before the dog leaves.

The first day in Cypress is quiet on purpose, and from day two the training runs daily in the home and on the sidewalks, in the stores and at the lake near it, with photos and video every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The go-home session is at the training home for drop-off families, a short drive back up 290, and on your own street for transport families and VIP graduates, where the walk to 34th Street is the test.

What an Oak Forest dog practices

A loose leash to the coffee shop, quiet on the porch and a settle at the patio.

The front-porch dog announces every walker from the porch, drags you to the coffee shop on 34th Street, cannot settle at the patio once you get there and bolts through the gate the moment it opens. The stay builds place and a quiet cue in the training home, a structured walk on the Cypress sidewalks with dogs and bikes passing close, a settle that moves under a patio table, and a wait at the gate and the front door that holds until released.

For the go-home session and the lessons afterwards, the classrooms are already yours: the White Oak Bayou trail and T.C. Jester Park, managed by Houston Parks and the Harris County Flood Control District, for cyclists and runners at every distance; Candlelight Park for a neighborhood walk; and the patios along 34th Street and Ella for the table. Check the Houston Parks and Flood Control District sites for the trail's current rules before you practice there on your own.

Which program Oak Forest families choose

Gold for most porch dogs, Platinum for the one that lunges on the trail.

Gold at $2,500 covers the friendly dog with bad manners, which is most of Oak Forest: two weeks of sit and stay, place, the loose leash, door boundaries, jumping and impulse control, with a go-home session, one added lesson and lifelong support. Platinum at $3,750 is the fit for the dog that lunges at cyclists or dogs on the trail, guards the porch or cannot be left in a small house; three weeks buys behavior modification, field trips and unlimited private lessons afterwards.

VIP at $10,000 is six weeks with off-leash reliability, the Mini-Educator included, transport and the handover on your street with unlimited in-home lessons; it is the choice for a household that travels with the dog and wants it finished. Silver at $1,500 is the one-week refresher for a graduate who has picked up old habits.

  • Gold for the friendly porch dog
  • Platinum for trail lunging, porch guarding and separation anxiety
  • VIP for the finished, travel-everywhere dog

Prices and the deposit

Published prices, a $250 deposit, and a transport most Oak Forest families skip.

Gold is $2,500 and Platinum is $3,750, and VIP is $10,000 with transport built in. Dates are reserved with a $250 deposit that is credited to the program. The $250 transport covers pickup and return with the first lesson at your home; from Oak Forest and Garden Oaks the drive is short enough that most families skip it, and the ones who add it want the go-home session on their own porch with the walk to 34th Street as the final test.

Private lessons afterwards are $160 at the training home or $220 at your house, an easy drive either way; Platinum and VIP include them without limit. Boarding with training refreshers is there for graduates when a trip comes up. We take calls and drop-offs from 6am to 9pm daily, and the pricing page has every number in one place.

Oak Forest specifics

Hot sidewalks, a trail full of bikes and a porch that faces the whole street.

From May to September the sidewalks on 34th Street fail the pavement test by mid-morning, so the coffee-shop walk is early or after dark and the stay runs the same hours, with store aisles carrying midday. The White Oak Bayou trail is a bike trail as much as a dog trail, so neutrality to wheels passing close is built before the go-home session uses it. A porch that faces the street is a barking post, and the quiet cue plus a settle on place is what stops it. Fireworks on July 4 carry through the neighborhood, so place with noise is rehearsed before the dog goes home, and mosquito pressure on the bayou runs all year.

  • Pavement test before the summer walk
  • Neutrality to bikes on the White Oak Bayou trail
  • A quiet cue for the porch
  • Place with noise before July 4

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How far are Oak Forest and Garden Oaks from the training home?

About 25 minutes outside rush hour, straight up 290 from inside the Beltway to Cypress near Fry Road. That makes drop-off and the go-home session easy, and most families here never need the $250 transport.

Will you use the White Oak Bayou trail?

The daily training happens around the training home in Cypress. The trail comes in at the go-home session for transport families and VIP graduates, and in follow-up lessons, where our trainer walks it with you past the cyclists and runners. Drop-off families practice it with the lessons included in Platinum and VIP.

Our dog barks at everyone from the porch. Gold or Platinum?

If the dog is friendly and the barking is excitement, Gold at $2,500 handles it with place, a quiet cue and a settle. If the barking comes with stiffening, lunging or fear of strangers, Platinum at $3,750 gives our trainers the three weeks of behavior modification it needs, plus unlimited lessons afterwards.

Is the go-home session at the training home or at my house?

At the training home in Cypress if you dropped off, which is a short drive back up 290. At your house if you added the $250 transport or booked VIP, where it ends with the walk to the coffee shop and a settle at the patio.

Can you handle a new-build townhome with no yard?

Yes. Plenty of Garden Oaks dogs live in a new build with a patio for a yard. The stay teaches place, the crate and a settle inside a house and the structured walk on real sidewalks, and the go-home session covers the front door that opens straight onto the street.
