Counter surfing
Counter surfing training in Houston: kitchens, islands and Thanksgiving
The turkey went missing off the island in Bridgeland while the family was at the door, and the Lab has checked the counters every evening since. Counter surfing is the most logical thing a dog does, and one of the easiest to stop once the kitchen has rules.

What it is
A dog that has learned the counter is a buffet, and checks it on a schedule.
Counter surfing starts as a sniff along the edge and grows into paws on the counter, a stretch across the island, and a dog that waits until the room empties before it moves. Big dogs reach the back of the counter standing; small dogs use the stool and the dishwasher door. The tell is a dog that patrols the kitchen when nobody is cooking, because it has been paid there before and is checking whether the payout came in.
What it is not is a dog being bad. Scavenging is the oldest behavior a dog has, and every stolen crust confirms it. It is also not resource guarding, unless the dog growls when you go to take the stolen thing back; a dog that steals and then defends the prize is on a different page, and it changes the plan.
- Paws on the counter or a stretch across the island
- Chairs and stools used as steps
- Patrolling the kitchen when nobody is cooking
- A growl over the stolen item is guarding, not surfing
Why it happens here
Open-plan kitchens, brisket resting on the island and a house full of holiday food.
Houston's newer homes in Bridgeland, Cinco Ranch and Woodforest are built around a kitchen island that opens to the living room, so the dog is a step from the food and nobody is watching. The cooking itself is generous: brisket resting on the counter for an hour, a crawfish boil spread over the patio table in spring, cookout platters on July 4 and a Thanksgiving where the turkey cools while everyone greets the guests.
Labs, goldens, doodles and beagles are the usual offenders, but any dog left with the run of the kitchen learns it. Houston workdays are long and the kitchen is the busiest room in the house, so the dog spends its afternoon alone with a counter that sometimes pays. A dog that has never been taught a place command has no better job to do.
- Islands open to the living room with nobody watching
- Brisket, boils, cookouts and the turkey
- Labs, goldens, doodles and beagles most often
- Long afternoons alone with a counter that pays
How we fix it
Make the counter stop paying, then give the dog a place to be while you cook.
The first rule is management, because a counter that pays once a month keeps the habit alive: nothing edible stays on the counter, the trash has a lid, and the dog is on a leash, in the crate or on its place bed when food is out. Then the place command: the dog learns to go to its bed and stay there while someone cooks, with the bed positioned where it can see the kitchen but not reach it, released only when the food is put away.
Leave-it comes next, taught with food on the floor, then on a low table, then on the counter with the dog on a leash, so the dog learns that food it did not earn is not its food. The handover puts your family in the kitchen with the dog on place and a plate on the island, and the dog learns that your kitchen has the same rules as ours.

Which program
Lessons for most dogs, Gold for the adolescent with no off switch.
Counter surfing is a household rule, so most dogs fix it in private lessons: $160 per session at our Cypress training home or $220 in your home, where our trainer sets up the place bed in your kitchen and coaches the family through the first meals. Two or three sessions is typical, and the in-home version wins here because the counter in question is yours.
An adolescent that surfs the counter, jumps on guests, pulls on the leash and cannot settle fits the two-week Gold Board & Train at $2,500, where place, impulse control and door boundaries are built together and the dog comes home with a go-home session, one more lesson and lifelong support. Platinum at $3,750 fits the dog that also guards the stolen item or has other behavior work to do. No program makes a Lab stop wanting the brisket; it makes the dog hold its place while the brisket rests.
Houston specifics
Thanksgiving, the crawfish boil and the foods that are more than a mess.
Thanksgiving is the counter surfing holiday in Houston: a full house, a turkey on the counter, children carrying plates at dog height, and a dog that has been practicing all fall. The plan is place or the crate for the whole afternoon, and our trainers see families book lessons in October for that reason. Crawfish season brings shells and corn onto patio tables in March and April, and a July 4 cookout puts platters at the edge of the pool deck.
Some of what a dog steals is dangerous rather than messy, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control list is the one to keep on the fridge; grapes, onions and sugar-free gum are the common kitchen items on it. Families inside the loop are about 30 to 45 minutes from Cypress outside rush hour, and the in-home lesson at $220 is the usual choice.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
How do I stop my dog from counter surfing when I am not home?
You cannot correct what you do not see, so the answer is management: nothing on the counter, a lid on the trash, and the dog in a crate or behind a gate while you are out. The training happens when you are home; the empty house is where the habit is starved.
Will a place command really keep my dog off the counter?
Yes, when it is taught to hold through cooking and released only after cleanup. The bed becomes the dog's job while the kitchen is busy, and a dog with a job is not scanning the island. Our trainers build the duration in the training home and the family builds it in your kitchen.
Should I punish my dog for stealing food?
Punishment after the fact teaches the dog to steal when you are out of the room, which is what most counter surfers already do. Interrupt what you see, put the dog on place, and make sure the counter never pays again. A calm rule beats a loud correction.
My dog only surfs when guests are here. Why?
Because guests put plates on side tables, leave the island unattended and open the door while the dog slips past. The fix is a place command that holds through greetings, a crate for the first hour of a party, and food kept above the reach of a dog with a stool. Practice before the party, not during it.
Is counter surfing dangerous or just annoying?
Both. A stolen sandwich is a mess; a stolen bunch of grapes, a chicken carcass or a pack of sugar-free gum is a veterinary emergency. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control list covers the common kitchen items, and it is one more reason the habit is worth fixing now.
