A stay vs a screen

Board and train vs online dog training courses

Online courses are the cheapest way to learn how dogs learn, and some are genuinely good. They are also the format with the highest quit rate, because a video cannot see your dog. This page is honest about when a screen is enough and when a Houston family should book the stay instead.

Side by side

A course teaches the owner; a stay trains the dog and then teaches the owner.

An online course is a set of videos and a plan. You watch, you practice, you troubleshoot from a forum or a comments section. The cost runs from free to a few hundred dollars at the time of writing, and the value depends entirely on what happens in your living room afterward. For a calm dog and a patient owner, that can be enough to build sit, down, a decent recall in the yard and better leash manners on the block.

Board and train removes the variable. Our trainers do the repetitions in the house, on Cypress streets and, in Platinum, on field trips to real stores and parks, then hand you a dog who already knows the rules and coach you at the go-home session. Photo and video updates come Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You still have to follow through, but you are maintaining a behavior instead of building one from a video.

When online wins

Online wins for basics, budget and an owner who will actually do the work.

A new puppy in a Spring apartment, a young couple with evenings free, a budget that does not have $2,500 in it: a good course can carry that household through sit, down, crate, name response and the first leash walks. It also wins for owners who want to understand the why. Learning about markers, timing and reward placement makes you better at maintaining any training later, including ours.

It wins, too, for the dog with no real problem. If you simply want a better-mannered dog and he is friendly, food-motivated and not scared of anything, there is no reason to spend on a stay first. Pick a course, practice ten minutes twice a day, and use the Houston summer to your advantage: early-morning sessions before the pavement heats up, then indoor work when it is too hot to be out.

  • A puppy or a calm adult with no behavior problems
  • Ten minutes twice a day, every day, for months
  • A budget under a few hundred dollars
  • You want to learn the theory yourself
  • The goal is basic manners, not a fix

When board and train wins

Board and train wins when the video cannot see what your dog is doing.

Reactivity is the clearest case. A course can explain thresholds and counter-conditioning, but it cannot tell you that your Shepherd mix was already over threshold when the other dog was 60 feet away on the Spring Creek Greenway, and it cannot adjust the next repetition. A trainer can, hundreds of times a day. That is why behavior modification is a Platinum program at $3,750 and not a module.

It also wins for the family who has already bought two courses and finished neither. That is many of the families we talk to, and it is not a failing; daily training is a skill and a schedule most households do not have. Gold at $2,500 builds the obedience in two weeks and includes one lesson afterward, and Platinum adds unlimited lessons. You keep the dog trained rather than training him. And it wins whenever anyone has been frightened, because aggression is not a self-study subject.

  • Pulling, lunging or barking at dogs or people
  • Growling, snapping or a bite history
  • A course or two already abandoned
  • No daily practice time in the household
  • The dog obeys in the kitchen and ignores you outside

What Houston families choose

Houston families start online, and the ones who call us are past that stage.

Families often call us after a course has stalled; many have already tried a course, a book or a well-meaning friend's advice, and it got them part of the way. The dog sits for dinner. He still drags them past every yard in Cinco Ranch. Our team hears that story on the free phone consultation weekly, and the answer is not that the course was bad. It is that the dog needed daily repetition with a handler who could read him.

The other group are families who start with a course for the puppy, do well, and then hit adolescence at eight to twelve months, when the same dog stops caring about a treat when a squirrel is available. That is the point a stay earns its price. A useful middle step is a single private lesson at $160 in Cypress: our trainer watches the dog, tells you whether the course is working, and says plainly whether a stay is warranted.

How to decide

Decide course or stay in five steps.

Be honest at step two and step three. They are where courses quietly fail, and where a family can save a lot of money by admitting it early.

1

Name the problem. Basics and manners point to a course; reactivity, aggression or a failed recall outside point to a stay.

2

Count your daily practice honestly. If you cannot commit ten minutes twice a day for months, a course will stall.

3

Check what you have already tried. A second abandoned course is not going to succeed where the first did not.

4

Book a $160 lesson in Cypress if you are unsure; our trainer will tell you whether a course can work for this dog.

5

If it is a stay, choose Gold for manners and Platinum for anything involving other dogs, strangers or fear.

The programs

What a stay includes, and the lesson that tells you if you need one.

Gold and Platinum are the programs most families choose after a course stalls. A single private lesson is the honest test.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Can I combine an online course with board and train?

Yes, and it is a good pairing in the right order. A course teaches you the theory; the stay builds the behavior in the dog; the go-home session and follow-up lessons connect the two. Families who understand timing and rewards maintain a board and train result more easily. Just do not expect the course to replace the stay for a hard problem.

Why is board and train so much more expensive than a course?

You are paying for a trainer's time every day for one to six weeks, a home for the dog to live in, field trips in Platinum, and lessons afterward. A course sells the same videos to everyone. The right question is cost per result: a $2,500 Gold that fixes the pulling costs less than three years of courses that do not.

Are there problems no online course should be used for?

Aggression toward people or dogs, resource guarding with a bite history, and severe anxiety. These need a trainer who can see the dog and adjust in real time, and they carry real risk if handled from a video. Our team assesses these on the free phone consultation and places most of them in Platinum or VIP.

Do you offer online lessons or video coaching?

No. Our team teaches in person: private lessons at the training home in Cypress or in your home, the Puppy Development Bundle, and board and train programs from one to six weeks. Platinum and VIP graduates receive ongoing support, and the lessons that come with those programs are in person too.
