Calm around children
Board and train for families with kids in Houston: calm around children
A dog and a five-year-old have the same energy and none of the same rules. The dog jumps, the child screams, the dog jumps higher. Or the dog growls when a toddler crawls toward his bowl, and the parents stop sleeping. Board and train for a family with kids is about building a dog who holds place while the household happens around him.

Who books it
Family board and train fits households where the dog and the kids set each other off.
The over-excited family dog. A goldendoodle or Lab who knocks over the three-year-old in greeting, snatches sandwiches from a stroller tray and barks through every playdate. He loves the kids; he has no idea how to be near them. Gold's place command, no-jump greetings and impulse control are what this dog is missing, and two weeks is usually enough to install them.
The dog who has growled at a child. A growl over a bone, a snap when a toddler grabbed an ear, stiffening when the baby crawls close. It is an aggression case, it is our trainers' specialty, and it needs Platinum: three weeks of behavior modification, handling work and a management plan the parents can actually live with.
The anxious dog in a loud house. Some dogs are not aggressive toward kids; they are overwhelmed by them, hiding, pacing or bolting through the door when the noise peaks. Structure and a reliable place to retreat to are what this dog needs, built in a quiet home before being tested in a loud one.
- Jumping on and knocking over young children
- Stealing food and toys from little hands
- A growl, a snap or stiffening around kids or the baby
- Dogs who bolt or shut down when the house gets loud

The stay, then the handover with the kids
A family dog is trained in our home, then handed back to the whole family, children included.
Drop-off at the Cypress training home or a $250 pick-up from your house. The first days are the ordinary foundation: crate, walk, meals for a sit, marker words. What is different is what gets proofed. Place must hold while someone drops a toy on the floor next to it. The greeting at the door must happen with four feet down while a person acts like an excited child. Food must be left alone when it is at knee height.
The go-home session is where families with kids get the most value, and it is built for them. Our trainers demonstrate every command, then hand the leash to each adult, and then, with school-age children, coach the kids through place, sit and a calm greeting. A dog who listens to a nine-year-old is a dog who has generalized the rules. Younger children are shown how to leave the dog alone on place, which is the rule that keeps everyone safe.
Days 1 to 3: crate, structured walks, meals for a sit and a baseline video of the dog with a stranger acting like a running child.
Days 4 to 7: sit/stay, place/stay and door boundaries; place is proofed with toys dropped beside it, squealing voices and people moving at child height.
Days 8 to 10: impulse control: food at knee level left alone, no jumping on anyone who enters, calm greetings with an excited handler.
Days 11 to 14: for Platinum dogs, handling work: ears, paws and tail touched while the dog holds a down, and behavior modification around whatever triggered the growl.
Days 15 to 20 (Platinum): field trips to a playground park, a busy store and a patio, proofing calm around real children at a controlled distance.
Final day: the go-home session with the whole family, a management plan for the house, and for Gold the additional lesson two weeks later once the kids have tested it.
Price and inclusions
A family dog's stay is $2,500 or $3,750, and the handover includes everyone who lives with him.
Gold at $2,500 buys two weeks and the manners a family needs: place/stay, sit/stay, loose leash, door boundaries, no jumping, no snatching, impulse control, with a go-home session, one additional lesson and lifelong support. Platinum at $3,750 buys three weeks and the behavior work a growl requires: down/stay, structured heel, behavior modification, field trips, a comprehensive handover and unlimited private lessons for the years the children are growing.
The $250 reservation deposit. Family calendars are the tightest we deal with, so once the free consultation sets the program, a $250 deposit through Reserve Your Spot holds the dates and is applied toward the total. School holidays and the weeks before a new baby are the windows that fill first, so reserve them as soon as the program is chosen.
- Children take part in the go-home session, at an age-appropriate level
- A written household plan covering meals, toys, place and the front door
- $250 transport turns the handover into a lesson in your own living room
- $250 deposit, credited to the program price

Houston specifics
Houston family life means playgrounds, pools, birthday parties and a dog who has to cope with all of it.
Platinum field trips for family dogs are planned around where Houston kids are: a playground in Bridgeland or Cinco Ranch on a Saturday morning, a store aisle on a busy afternoon, a patio at dinner. The dog holds a down/stay while children run past, closer each day. Backyard pools are a Houston reality too, and gate boundaries are drilled because an open pool gate is a bigger risk than a jumped-on toddler.
Summer changes the day. From May through September the outdoor work moves to early morning and evening, and the go-home session includes how to run place and calm indoors during the long afternoons when the kids are home from school. Fireworks around July 4 and New Year's are prepared for with crate and place work, following the AVMA's guidance, because a panicked dog and an excited child are a bad combination.
- Playground-adjacent proofing at parks in Bridgeland, Cinco Ranch and Towne Lake
- Pool gate and back door boundaries drilled as safety rules
- Summer afternoons handled with indoor structure the kids can help run
- Katy and Cypress families are 25 to 35 minutes away; The Woodlands about 35 to 45

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Can board and train make my dog safe around my kids?
It can make him far safer and give you a plan you can run. A dog who jumps and snatches usually becomes a calm dog on place within Gold's two weeks. A dog who has growled or snapped needs Platinum, and the honest outcome is a changed dog plus supervision rules, because no trainer should promise a dog with a bite history can be left alone with a toddler.
Do my children take part in the training?
At the go-home session, yes. Our trainers coach school-age children through sit, place and a calm greeting so the dog learns the rules apply to small people too. Younger children are taught the one rule that matters most: the dog on his bed is left alone. Parents get the full handover and a written household plan.
Will my dog forget my kids while he is away?
No. Two or three weeks is a short stretch in a dog's memory, and the reunion at the go-home session is usually loud. What changes is that he comes back with a place command and a greeting that does not knock anyone over, so the reunion becomes the family's first practice of the new rules.
How much is board and train for a family dog in Houston?
$2,500 for the two-week Gold or $3,750 for the three-week Platinum, with the six-week VIP at $10,000 for families who want off-leash reliability. Transport is $250 and includes the first lesson at your house, and a $250 reservation deposit holds the dates and is applied to the program.
My dog growled at my toddler once. Is that a board and train case?
It is a call to our team first, and probably a Platinum case. A single growl is information: the dog was uncomfortable and said so. Our trainers assess what triggered it, build handling tolerance and impulse control over three weeks, and hand you a management plan. The unlimited private lessons afterward exist for exactly this kind of household.
