Obedience, priced plainly
How much is dog obedience training?
Obedience is the word people search, but what they usually want is a dog who listens at the front door, on the sidewalk and around guests. Here is what each price buys toward that, and which one fits which dog.

The short version
Gold at $2,500 is the obedience program; lessons and Silver sit below it, Platinum above.
For a dog who needs the full set of manners, Gold is the answer. Two weeks living in our trainer's Cypress home, daily work on sit and stay, place and stay, loose leash walking, door boundaries, jumping and impulse control, then a go-home session where you learn to run it, an extra lesson afterward and lifelong support by phone. That is $2,500, or about $179 per day.
Silver at $1,500 is one week and narrower: loose leash walking, door boundaries and basic structure, best as a refresher or a starting point rather than a full obedience course. Private lessons at $160 or $220 suit a dog who needs one or two skills and a household with time to practice. Platinum at $3,750 is obedience plus behavior modification, field trips and unlimited lessons.
- Lesson: one or two skills, you do the reps
- Silver: a week of leash and door structure
- Gold: the full obedience foundation
- Platinum: obedience plus behavior work and public proofing

The reasoning
What the money buys is repetition in real places, not a list of commands.
Any dog can learn the word sit in an afternoon. Obedience means holding that sit while a delivery driver knocks, a squirrel crosses the yard or another dog walks past on the Towne Lake boardwalk. Building that takes hundreds of repetitions across different places with the same clear rules every time, which is what a stay provides and what a busy household in Cinco Ranch usually cannot.
The price also covers the part most people underrate: the handover. A trained dog returned to a household that was never taught the rules drifts within weeks. Every one of our programs ends with a go-home session, and Gold and Platinum add lessons and ongoing support so the obedience survives contact with real life.
Side by side
Every obedience price at Best Dog University on one table.
Two things do not appear on the table because they apply to every row. First, the free phone consultation, where our team hears about your dog and tells you which option fits, or whether you need any of them. Second, the $250 reservation deposit, which holds a start date and is credited toward the program price.
Transport is the one add-on: $250 for door-to-door pickup and return, with the first lesson delivered in your home, which families in Pearland, League City or Montgomery often prefer to a drive of 55 to 70 minutes to Cypress each way. VIP includes it. Pickup and return are scheduled around the go-home session so the handover happens in your own front room.
| Option | Length | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|

Houston specifics
In Houston, obedience gets tested in specific places, so we train in them.
Field trips in Platinum take the obedience out of the house and into the pet and hardware stores along 290 and Fry Road, onto neighborhood sidewalks in Bridgeland, and to parks in cooler months. Gold works the sidewalks and the door. From May to September outdoor sessions move to early morning and evening, and midday obedience happens indoors where the air conditioning is.
Timing matters for another reason. Families often book obedience before Thanksgiving guests, before July 4 fireworks or before a baby arrives, and those weeks fill first. If your goal has a date attached, reserve early; a start date at a home with a limited number of dogs is a real slot, not a queue. Summer weeks are often easier to reserve.
- Stores off 290 and Fry Road for public manners
- Sidewalks and the front door for daily manners
- Summer: dawn, dusk and indoor midday
- Holiday and event weeks fill first
What it means for your dog
Puppies, adults and hard cases each land on a different line of the table.
Puppies under four months: the Puppy Development Bundle, four private sessions at $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home, because obedience at that age is mostly about the household learning to shape the puppy. From about five months, an adolescent who has stopped listening is a Gold candidate, and the sooner the better. Waiting for adolescence to pass on its own rarely works.
Adult dogs with manners problems and no fear or aggression: Gold, or a few lessons if the household is consistent. Dogs who bark and lunge at other dogs, growl at strangers or panic when left: Platinum, because obedience alone does not fix behavior, and our team will say so rather than sell Gold to a dog who needs more.
List the situations where your dog does not listen: door, leash, guests, other dogs.
If the list is one or two items and someone can practice daily, start with a lesson.
If it is the whole list, Gold is the honest fit.
If any item involves fear, lunging or growling, ask about Platinum.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
What is the cheapest way to get basic obedience?
A private lesson at $160 at our Cypress location, with homework you practice every day. For a dog who needs one or two skills and a household that follows through, that is often enough. It stops being cheapest when you are booking the fifth or sixth lesson, which is where Silver or Gold takes over.
Is Gold enough obedience for an adolescent dog?
For most adolescents, yes. Two weeks of daily structure on sit, place, the leash and the door is what a six to eighteen month old dog usually lacks. If the adolescence comes with lunging at dogs or fear of strangers, Platinum's behavior modification and field trips are the better fit.
Does obedience training include off-leash work?
Gold and Platinum build reliable on-leash obedience and solid stays. Off-leash reliability in public is the VIP program, six weeks at $10,000 with the Mini-Educator e-collar included. Around Houston's bayous and traffic we do not treat off-leash as a basic skill, and we will not promise it from a two-week stay.
How much is obedience training for two dogs?
Each dog is a separate program at the listed price, because each needs his own daily training and his own go-home session. Whether two dogs from one home can stay at the same time depends on space in the house, since we keep the number small. Ask our team on the free call about timing.
Are there hidden fees on top of the program price?
No. The price on this page is the program price, the $250 deposit is part of it, and the only add-on is the optional $250 transport service. You bring your dog's usual food and vaccination records. Lessons included in Gold and Platinum are included, not billed separately.
