Females in season

Can a female dog in heat do board and train?

Heat cycles rarely fit a calendar, and families worry they will lose a reserved spot or send a dog into a house full of males. Neither needs to happen. Here is how the timing works, what changes for her in a stay, and what to do when a season arrives early.

The short answer

Timing is the tool: plan the stay between seasons, and call the moment the plan changes.

A home with a limited number of dogs is planned week by week. If the house that fortnight holds an intact male, a female in season is not a sensible addition, for her sake and his. If the house holds only neutered males and spayed females, the picture is different. That is why this is a question for the call, where our team can see the actual bookings, and not a line on a form.

Most females come into season about twice a year, though the spacing varies by dog and breed, and a season lasts a couple of weeks. Your veterinarian can tell you what is typical for yours. If you know roughly when her last one started, you know roughly when the next window opens, and the stay can be placed in the quiet months between.

  • Tell our team when her last season started
  • Pick dates in the gap between seasons
  • Call as early as possible if one starts before drop-off
  • Ask your vet what is normal for her

If she comes into season

An early season is a change of plans, not a lost spot, and early notice is what makes it easy.

Seasons arrive early and late. If you see the signs in the week before drop-off, call or text our team straight away. Our published policy on changing dates is simple: tell us as early as you can, and the reservation is moved where the calendar allows. Earlier is easier, because a place released two weeks out can be refilled and one released the night before cannot.

If a season starts during a stay, our team calls you. What happens next depends on the dogs in the house at the time, and the plan is made with you rather than for you. Nothing about the training is lost by a pause: the commands she has learned stay learned, and the work picks up where it stopped.

1

Watch for the signs in the weeks before drop-off

2

Call or text our team the day you notice them

3

Agree a new start date where the calendar allows

4

Keep practicing the crate and a calm walk at home in the meantime

5

Confirm the new dates and what to bring

What changes for her

The training is the same; the walks and the company are managed more carefully.

A female in season can be restless, clingy or distracted, and some lose interest in food for a day or two. None of that changes the curriculum. Sit, place, a loose leash, doors and impulse control are taught the same way. What changes is management: where she walks, when, and which dogs she is near, because male dogs on the Towne Lake trails will be interested whatever she is doing.

Houston adds its own layer. From May to September the outdoor work already moves to early morning and evening, and a restless dog in season benefits from the extra indoor place work that summer schedule brings. Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, overlaps half the year, so her records and your contact details travel with her either way.

  • Same commands, same method
  • More indoor work, more careful walks
  • Food and mood noted in the updates
  • Records and contacts on file for storm season

Spay timing

Whether and when to spay is your vet's call, and a stay can be planned before or after it.

Some families plan to spay and ask whether to do it before or after training. That is a health decision for you and your veterinarian, based on her age, breed and growth. From our side the only requirement is recovery: a dog should arrive cleared by the vet to walk, climb into a car and work, with no sutures to protect and no cone to manage.

If the surgery is booked a few weeks before a stay, use those weeks well. A dog on restricted activity can still learn to love the crate and hold a short place, which makes the recovery calmer and gives her a head start. Tell our team the surgery date on the call so the dates are set with enough room.

What we do at Best Dog University

Silver, Gold or Platinum by behavior, with the dates set around her cycle.

The program is chosen by what she needs, not by her cycle. Silver, one week at $1,500, gives a starting point or a refresher on the loose leash and doors. Gold, two weeks at $2,500, covers sit, place, the loose leash, jumping and impulse control with a go-home session, an additional lesson and lifelong support. Platinum, three weeks at $3,750, adds behavior modification and field trips for a female who is reactive, anxious or pushy.

The honest fit: if her seasons are unpredictable and your dates are fixed, say so. Our team would rather plan a stay with a little slack around it than have you rush a drop-off. If a stay cannot be timed in the next few months, private lessons at $160 in Cypress or $220 in your home can start the structure now.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Will I lose my deposit if my dog comes into heat?

Ask our team about the deposit terms before you pay it, so nothing is a surprise. The published policy on date changes is to call or text as early as possible so the reservation can be moved where the calendar allows. A season you report the day you see it is the easiest kind of change to handle.

Can she still train while she is in season?

Yes. The commands do not depend on her cycle, and many dogs in season work well indoors on place, sit and doors. What changes is where and with whom she walks. Whether she can do that training in our house during a season depends on the other dogs booked, which our team confirms on the call.

How do I know when her next season will be?

Count from the start of her last one and ask your vet what spacing is typical for her breed and age. Many females are fairly regular, some are not. Write the dates down each time; after a couple of cycles you will have a pattern, and planning a stay becomes simple.

Should I spay her before board and train?

That is a health decision for you and your veterinarian. If you do spay first, give her the full recovery your vet recommends and bring the clearance to drop-off. If you do not, tell our team her season history and the stay will be placed between cycles.
